MCS is short for Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, and is an illness caused by exposures to chemicals. Either one big exposure (chemical spill of some sort), or by small daily dozes - and it’s like that I have developed MCS - with help from my weak/missing immune system.

Ever since I came on the internet I have learned a lot about, how dangerous chemicals are to the body; and how many ordinary places, you get in contact with chemicals.

I have also read about how you, i.e. if you have eczema, obtain way much more of what’s in the air, than if your skin is soft and smooth, and then you have to add, what you get in through the airways. - When I started to work in an environment contaminated with fumes from chemicals (a department where office machine of all kinds were reparied) I still had large purirent rashes from having Mycosis Fungoides, so I have really been exposed in high dozes on a daily basis 8 hours a day for 10 and a half years - not to forget my apartment, where I heated up with gas, and my stove was a gas stove - also a source poluting with chemicals. To-day I cannot be in a kitchen, where the food is being cooked on a gas stove. I immediately get breathing problems.

MCS is not recognized in Denmark, and that hasn’t made it easier for me to apply for social pension - and it also has a major influence when I apply for handicap aids, like special knife, special fork etc.

The worse thing is that I cannot take any medication for my constant, severe joint pains. My rheumatologist has tried several different meds, and every time I have gained severe side effects - often side effects never seen before. Therefor I get steroid/local anaesthetic injections in my joints.

To suffer from MCS has a major influence on my social life. Several of our friends have vanished into thin air - half of my family prefer to be able to smoke and wear perfumed products rather than be with me - something I can’t change - ALL !!! of us suffering from MCS have experienced this situation. I don’t know anybody, who doesn’t have major problems getting others to understand that it is not something, we just have come up with, and it’s not hysterical, we really get physically ill - sometimes for days - after exposure to things we don’t tolerate.

To prove that something happens, when you get exposed - in this case perfume - you can here look at a copy of a brain scan of brenda McLaughlin, before and after being exposed to the perfume ESCAPE by Calvin Klein :

BEFORE AFTER
Before.jpg (10664 bytes) After.jpg (10441 bytes)

Click on the pictures to see an enlarged version. (Approx 50kb.)

Linda, who got the scanning and the doctor’s comment from Julia Kendall, have this comment to the picture above:

Basically, these scans just reflect the before and after images of the brain - before and after exposure to perfume, that is. The second scan shows a dramatic increase of blood flow into the brain. According to Brenda, who had the scan, when this occurs, she feels agitated and often upset or angry. She said that the doctor who did the scan told her that a more common result is to see a dramatic reduction in blood flow to the brain -which results in the brain fog so many of us know so well. This is just more evidence that MCS takes many forms - since it is a symptom of underlying health problems, not a condition unto itself

Linda

Julia Kendall, who died July 12., 1997, has made sure that these pictures have come out into public knowledge.

Here you can read the doctor’s comments. (As the original letter is difficult to read, the text has been rewritten)

REFERRING PHYSICIAN
Jeffrey Anderson, M.D.

Dear Dr. Anderson:

Exam
This concerns your patient of the above name referred for evaluation of cerebral perfusion. On 12/23/93 regional cerebral blood flow by means of Xe-133 was determined with the Shimadzu Brain Dedicated Unit. After inhalation of 30mCi of Xe-133, cerebral blood flow was found to fluctuate between 40 ml/min/100g in both dorsal frontal lobes and both temporal lobes with focal hypoperfusion also in both posterior parietal lobes. Maximum perfusion is observed in the visual cortex at 76 ml/min/100g and the remainder of the gray matter blood flow fluctuates between 40 and 64 ml/min/100g.

Thirty minutes post inhalation of perfume with PetCO2 of 32 vs. 35 ml/min/100g, there is an increase perfusion in the dorsal aspects of the frontal lobes from 40 to 60 ml/min/100g with an increase of perfusion also in the right temporal lobe. Maximum perfusion is 64 ml/min/100g in the basal ganglia and the remainder of the gray matter blood flow fluctuates between 40 and 64 ml/min/100g.

The study was followed by brain SPECT by means of HMPAO (Ceretec, Amersham) for assessment of regional cerebral perfusion. 60 min. after IV injection of 30 mCi of HMPAO, nine 1.6 cm. thick transaxial slices of the brain are acquired and a 3-dimensional image is reconstructed by back projection with adequate filtering. Coronal and sagittal frames are displayed, demonstrating bilateral temporal hypoperfusion, bilateral dorsal frontal hypoperfusion with diminution of perfusion in the dorsal cingulate gyrus and marked thinning of cortical perfusion in dorsal aspects of frontal and parietal lobes with a pattern of scalloping.

In conclusion, findings suggest:

  1. Diminished cerebral bloodflow
  2. Bilateral frontal, temporal and parietal hypoperfusion.
  3. Marked scalloping pattern of perfusion in frontal and parietal lobes.
  4. Vasculitis vs. exposure to neurotoxic substances.

I thank you for referring Ms. McLaughlin to our laboratory.

Sincerely yours,

Ismael Mena, M.D.

Subject: Honoring Cindy Duehring

Cindy Duehring left us June 30, 1999--13 months ago. We must not forget this courageous young woman who worked so hard for the cause of the chemically injured/MCS community. Cindy was awarded the Right Livelihood
Award (Sweden's Nobel Prize) for her work on our issues, work done while she was in very debilitated health condition. The pesticide (Dursban) that poisoned Cindy, leading to her suffering/death has been removed from the market. How many more will suffer/die as we lose time/life battling industries' right to make money versus our right to live? Last year I wrote a liturgy to Cindy, and Sharon Reichert put it on her webpage. In honor of Cindy, I started, with the help of a few listserve support groups, an all-inclusive ribbon project for all the various illnesses that are caused or affected by chemical toxins. This project was a way to help many of us deal with the loss of Cindy and the reality of our own losses.

The liturgy can be found at the URL below. Click on Tributes, scroll down to Cindy Duehring.

The ribbon project can be found at the URL below. You are more than welcome to use it with other ribbon projects, in a show of solidarity. Many steps have been made moving forward since I first "met" Cindy---many steps remain............

Sometimes we become so wrapped up in our own lives and current issues, that we forget those who have gone on ahead of us--and their numbers are legion, whether civilians or soldiers suffering from Agent Orange and Gulf War Illness. Let's share some love in Cindy's honor. Permission granted to repost this email in its entirety.

THIS I HAVE RECEIVED FROM MY FRIEND MARJO IN FINLAND :

Hi,

Interesting to see what the results of the EU study quoted below *) will be! At least it is made in Sweden with Denmark and Iceland participating. Not Finland! - but we don't have MCS as one doc just recently said in a newspaper article. He also said that as soon as people hear/read about it those suffering from unspecific symptoms/undiagnosed illnesses will start to ''suffer from MCS''.

In 1994, the European Union (EU) commissioned Nicholas A. Ashford, Associate Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, to investigate the prevalence of MCS in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Greece and the UK. While Ashford had no problem documenting MCS in all of the countries under investiga-tion, his report and its findings have been embargoed by EU.

The quality of the indoor environment has a major impact on public health (e.g. allergies, asthma, hypersensitivities like SBS and MCS ( Multi Chemical Sensitivity ), air-ways infections, cancer, etc).Because of this there is a strong need for relevant information about risk factors indoors(e.g.pollutants ).Due to a limited scientific effort within the area, but also due to the fact that indoor air is a multidisciplinary science, there is an essential lack of knowledge. So far, few multidisciplinary studies have been conducted. Studies are mainly done with emphasis on one or few disciplines, and the peer-review process in scientific journals is also mostly made with expertise from mainly one discipline. Published studies are thus often excellent in one or few disciplines but can have major flaws in other, as important disciplines. As a result different "truths" may exist on the same subject in different disciplines. The resulting messages on prevention to the general public may therefore differ depending on what discipline the "expert" knowledge is gathered from. Within the Nordic countries a method to gather and scrutinise scientific information on indoor environments/health, in a truly multidisciplinary setting, has been tested in so called NORD-works. The results are very promising, and the interest internationally is large. The overarching purpose with the now proposed EURO-works is to use the method from the NORD-works in an European setting. In short this means that:(1) the total scientific literature on specific topics shall be reviewed by a European multidisciplinary group, (2) the group shall try to come to conclusions regarding the state of the art within the selected area of importance for public health, (3) multidisciplinary scientific European networks shall be created, of importance for coming scientific efforts and for the dissemination of knowledge and preventive measures throughout Europe.

I have received the below from Maggie :

Subject: [IMMUNE] Chemical Injury Awareness Pin Project

To: immune@immuneweb.org

The project now has its own webpage, please help spread the word. We need proactive awareness rather than constantly being on the defensive against the psycho(logists) <thanks Pete--this made me smile> who stand in opposition to us.

In solidarity,

Maggie MacRaven

http://ebb.freeshell.org/

The goal of the Chemical Injury Awareness pin project is to heighten awareness and to educate the public regarding the adverse health impacts of environmental degradation, outdoor/indoor air pollution, and the pervasive use of toxic chemicals in commerce, most of which have not been tested for health/life safety or long-term, low-level effects.

The project umbrellas all toxin-related health issues, including, but not limited to, birth and developmental disorders, new and emerging disorders such as Chemical Intolerance/Injury (CI), Gulf War Syndrome, as well as familiar fixed-named diseases such as carcinogen-related Cancer, Parkinson's, and certain forms of Multiple Sclerosis, to name only a few. The ultimate focus is prevention.

The colors of the awareness project, which began in 1999, are purple and yellow. Purple represents wisdom and power. Yellow represents the canaries sent into the coal-mine to warn of impending danger, and also the familiar symbol of "tie a yellow ribbon round the old oak tree" as we await much-needed recognition for those who have already been harmed.

The wise and powerful canary will "come home" victorious!

In solidarity,

This I have received from a netfriend :

Hi everyone,

The Global Campaign for the recognition of MCS (www-mcs-global.org) will have some new tools very soon.

The first downloadable tool has been an informative English flyer by Christiane Tourtet, MCS-Global coordinator for Florida. I now provided a German flyer with similar content and for the same purpose - namely to give every German MCS'er a possibility to inform his family members, ignorant friends, stubborn neighbors etc about MCS. The flyers provide all the arguments you might need.

Secondly, I have provided an official letter signed by MCS-Global. It will hopefully be online tomorrow. This official letter can be sent to doctors and nurses in English and German speaking countries. It is specifically addressed to medical personnel who are ignorant of MCS or who discriminate MCS victims. ! If MCS'ers are confronted with doctors like these, they can download the letter and flyer and send them to their doctors after the consultation.

No MCS'er has to expose him/herself to any aggressive comment and even worse treatment because of writing letters. The sender is the Global campaign, we offer advice and help to the ignorant or helpless doctors - and hopefully next time the doctor will be less ignorant when he/she meets a person with MCS.

We hope that some day Dutch and Danish, French and Italian MCS'ers will help us with translations of these useful tools into other languages. We plan to write similar flyers and brochures addressed to anaesthesists and houseowners etc. Any idea into this direction is welcome. Send these to mcs-global-germany@web.de or diana@mcs-global.org
